The Water Authorities’ Climate Monitor

Dutch water authorities have high ambitions when it comes to sustainability. Their ambition is to be 100% energy neutral in 2025 and to be climate neutral in 2035. The Climate Monitor water authorities explains how the water authorities are performing on these ambitions. The Climate Monitor is a joint initiative of our bank and the Association of Dutch Water Authorities. This annual study analyses the water authorities’ contribution to energy and climate targets. The study is conducted by consultancy firm Arcadis.

The 2025 Climate Monitor shows that the sector has achieved significant results. With energy neutrality reaching 97.3%, the water authorities have almost achieved their collective ambition of becoming energy-neutral by 2025. Investments in energy efficiency, solar and wind energy, and the generation of renewable energy from wastewater treatment processes have made an important contribution. One caveat is that a dry year also contributes to lower energy consumption.

The water authorities are exploring innovative solutions, such as energy storage and hydrogen applications, to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply in the future. Step by step, they are working towards a climate-neutral sector with a secure energy supply.
